Lighting Matters March 2012

For those who know me, the self confessed storker’s at trade shows and events around the globe and the L.O.T.R. (Lighting on the Run) groupies and fans, and the trusting companies who have and still are supporting the cause, I thank you.

Lighting is my passion and looking at the kit we use to create high quality images and how to use it in the best way regardless of the style of production,is important to the efficiency of how we work in an environment that is now-a-days Cash and Time critical. I am constantly asked about what I use, how I use it and what the best tools are for a standard everyday talking head kit. The standard Lighting on the Run “Doco kit.”

This has changed for me over the years and has developed into an ever expanding but relatively fine tuned tool kit. But as any seasoned image maker knows, you have to stop somewhere, or you will never get your money back, as production never seem to want to pay for everything you get out and use, even though they “Love the Pictures” once they get them back to the cutting room, but are tools YOU need to use to do the job well and get some job satisfaction form the very short, lunch-less days we seem to work!!

Lighting kit is personal but there are for me a few essential tools that you need that work almost faultlessly and last for years, are easy to set up, has low maintenance and running costs and gives a high quality light output at low power.

Here is my L.O.T.R . kit:

1 x Kinoflo Divalight 400 Kit with off set arm and Matthews folding stand
Tungsten & Daylight tubes & 60 Degree Honeycomb & 1/2 Flozier

(Have a look at the new Kinoflo “Celeb” LED lamp to replace the above. Runs on 24V also)

1 x 5ft-1Kw.Dedolight Octodome (Panaura5 as it is also known) and 1000S+ head with Grid Cloth (Optional)

4 x Dedo DLH4-150W Heads with DT-24 Inline dimmers, stands & barn doors

1 x Dedo DP1 Projector with Gobo holder and 60mmm Lens

1 x Master Set of L.O.T.R Gobo’s from Lee Filters

1 x Set of Matthews Road Rags & Mini Grips

This kit has lasted me over a decade and is kit that WORKS, creates beautiful images and you will buy it ONCE!

Till next time,

Keep it sharp.

Jonathan.

“THE DEVINE LIGHT”

The original “PanAura 5″ was labelled “The portable window” and is renowned for its beautiful light character – we are now pleased to announce its big brother
the “PanAura 7″.

The PanAura system of lighting instruments are large surface area soft lights that produce a beautiful wrap around light from extremely thin lightweight fixtures.
This allows these systems to be used with convenience and speed – and now with the introduction of the 7’ version twice the output and size.

The fixture includes two individually switchable, dimmable lamps that can be boosted from 400W to 575W daylight or alternatively with tungsten balanced discharge lamps, this allows a dimming range from 300W to 1150W without significant colour shift with both lamp types. The fixture is also available as a traditional 2Kw tungsten source or also as a 4kw tungsten source with high temperature octodome fabric.

The 7 foot wide soft box is available with three different diffusers and a 40° grid is only 60cm deep, which provides excellent space saving solutions compared to similar sized soft lights currently available. This allows the use of this big window sized soft light in confined spaces and on location.

This is following the Dedolight philosophy of being economical, interchangeable, compact and as lightweight as possible, without any loss in quality.

The PanAura7 is powered from two standard DEB400DT electronic ballasts, which additionally can be mounted to the lighting stand by ballast holders to provide best possible stability without using additional sand bags.

These systems are available for rental and sale as either daylight (HMI) kits or traditional tungsten kits – or a combination of both.

The Dedolight PanAura7 also won the CINEC AWARD in September 2010.”
